Quicken 3.0 Back Door Defeating the Quicken Password... Quicken stores the data in *.QDT files. The default is QDATA.QDT. You can password protect either the File or the Transaction. The password protected transaction prevents you from changing or deleting any transactions prior to a certain date. This generally does not affect our analysis, but the file password prevents us from accessing the file through Quicken. The simple fix is using a copy of the *.QDT file (NEVER TRY IT ON THE ORIGINAL). Use your favorite editor (mine is Norton's Disk Editor) and zero out the offsets 445, 446, 447 (Change whatever hex value is there to "00 00 00" ). If you don't know what the hex is, refer to your notes from Roland Lascola's Presentations on hexadecimal numbers. Otherwise, check any good text on DOS for a refresher in hex math. Now go back to your copy of Quicken and the password should be gone. If you need the back door changes for version 5.0 please e-mail me at amber@accessdata.com for 5.0 Quicken backdoor.
